A terrestrial robot has been deployed to measure High-Resolution Surface Methane Emissions at ReGen Monterey Landfill
January 30, 2024 On January 30, 2024, a UC Berkeley postdoctoral researcher (Youngseok Jo) initiated a pioneering methane emissions monitoring campaign at the ReGen Monterey Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill using an advanced robotic platform. The campaign was led by one researcher , who integrated Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) methane sensors capable of detecting concentrations at 1 ppm resolution , mounted on a quadruped robot commonly used in industrial and environmental i

Autonomous IoT-Enabled Methane Chamber Network for 24/7 Landfill Emission Estimation
February 28, 2024 Youngseok Jo, a UC Berkeley postdoctoral researcher, has developed a next-generation methane chamber system designed to replace conventional manually operated methane flux chambers at MSW landfills. The new chamber network integrates a methane gas, temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity sensors to continuously collect point source-level emission data at landfills. All measurements are streamed in real time to an IoT infrastructure, where raw sensor d

Team conducted Integrated Robotic and Aerial Methane Field Campaign at ReGen Monterey Landfill
June 3-6, 2024 The team conducted a comprehensive 4-day, field campaigns at the ReGen Monterey MSW Landfill from June 3 to June 6, 2024. Project collaborator Carbon Mapper also performed high-altitude surface methane emission measurements using aircraft, capturing plume-scale emissions and providing complementary, regional-level emission perspectives. In parallel, UC Berkeley deployed a quadruped terrestrial robotic inspection platform equipped with Tunable Diode Laser (TDL)
